<image:caption>"...this book is grounded in reality. The pictures (with the exception of one or two) are of real gardens, so the designs have been drawn up to please clients rather than impress show judges and the gardens have been paid for by gardeners not corporate sponsors. The result is a series of ideas that are easy to copy." Review from The Chatty Gardener blog, August 10, 2016 Frances Lincoln, 2016</image:caption>

      <image:title>Books - Oudolf Hummelo - A Journey through a Plantsman's Life</image:title>
<image:caption>"Written to mark Oudolf’s 70th birthday, HUMMELO: A Journey Through a Plantsman’s Life is a lavishly photographed celebration of all that happened following the family’s move to Hummelo. While showcasing the evolution of Oudolf’s work and design philosophy, it is also the story of a place, the nursery he and his wife founded to grow plants that, at the time, were unavailable for purchase elsewhere. While the nursery flourished, drawing visitors from throughout the world, so too did Oudolf’s practice." <image:title>Books - Planting, a New Perspective</image:title>
<image:caption>The picture is the Estonian edition ! "More than any of Oudolf/Kingsbury’s collaborations, Planting establishes the “new style” as a potent artistic and intellectual movement. This book has real meat. The liberal use of Oudolf’s planting plans are reason alone to buy this book. For the designer or gardener, these hand sketches are a Rosetta stone for understanding Oudolf’s process. This book delves deeply into compositional strategy: how are plants grouped, layered, and mixed based upon their unique structures and ecologies? Kingsbury’s recent doctoral work at Sheffield clearly comes through in the brilliantly explicated sections of perennial’s lifespans and competitive strategies... It grounds the "new style" in a broader, more international perspective that ensures its endurance. Planting just might be one of the most valuable books on ecological planting design yet written." Melianthus major too, although this year they are flowering and seeding several months earlier than last and I fear will be summer/drought dormant. Papaver orientale ‘Königin Charlotte’ in front, not establishing well - indeed one of the interesting things here is how slowly (or badly) many perennials establish, all ones from drought or short-growth season regions; don’t really understand why yet. Orange Bulbine frutescens on the right, unkilleable, utterly durable, a useful low evergreen.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A city garden by Frank van der Linden, one of the real plantsmen whose work we featured. Compact sites lead many designers to adopt a ‘less is more’ approach. Frank is one who very definitely doesn’t but uses his knowledge of plant habitats to shoehorn in as much diversity as possible.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One of the real privileges of researching this book was getting into gardens behind those amazing canal houses we all gawp at as tourists in Amsterdam - they’re often very secret places. <image:caption>Luc Engelhard’s garden in an old polder landscape is an experimental space where he plays with structures and plantings before using them in clients’ gardens. I've gone on about the non-classical way a lot of Dutch designers works with clipped woodies in a 'non-classical' way; the other side of the coin is a greater adventurousness in selecting plant material. Anyone wanna guess what these bobbly chaps are? Enkianthus campanulatus! They must look amazing in autumn.</image:caption>
