For a number of years now I have been involved with creating new plantings for Bristol City Council, using flowering perennials and ornamental grasses. A particular focus has been on bringing colour and interest to roadside situations on major commuter routes. Clearly, species chosen have to be very robust, long-lived and low maintenance.
So far, so good – the results are dramatically different to the usual bedding or stick-like roses often seen in municipal plantings. They have also saved the city council a lot of money. Plants are generally bought in from wholesale herbaceous specialists – however plants can also be grown as plugs from seed, making larger schemes very cost effective.
