"The voice of authority with renegade undertones"

Writing and Journalism

Over the years I have written for: Gardens Illustrated, The English Garden, The Daily Telegraph, Green Places, The Garden (Royal Horticultural Society), BBC Gardener’s World Magazine, Homes and Gardens, House and Garden, The Guardian, The Times, Financial Times.

Whilst my ‘stock in trade’ is plants, gardens and landscape I have also occasionally written about the following areas: environment, arts, agriculture and countryside – and am always ready  to do more work in these fields.
In writing about gardening and landscape I am always interested in finding connections and underlying philosophies. Anyone who develops a worthwhile garden has something to say, something which the rest of us can learn from – this may be about design and aesthetics or about practice and technique - my role is to communicate this skill, knowledge or idea to others. I am particularly intrigued about why particular people (or particular cultures) do such different things in their gardens.
I am also interested in developing a commentary on environmental concerns, particularly as they affect gardening, landscape and food production. Improving sustainability however depends on the application of scientically-based knowledge and technology not ideologically-driven beliefs – hence my deep scepticism about the organic movement and my support for biotechnology.

Zürich's MFO Park, a dramatic example of facadegreening, where climbing plants are trained over a giant pergola - the kind of horticultural innovation I love to write about.

Prairie planting by James Hitchmough at Sheffield Botanic Gardens.

New York's Highline - planting by Piet Oudolf - another example of innovation. (pic. Paula Elliott)

Le Jardin de Berchigranges, in the Vosges, France. My best garden discovery of 2010.

Sarastro, the nursery and garden of Christian Kreß, Austria.
